Beds drying out and filling with weeds?

Between the summer heat and the red clay across much of Tallahassee, beds without a fresh layer of mulch dry out fast, bake the roots, and fill with weeds. Older landscapes in Myers Park and newer ones in Southwood alike look unfinished the moment the mulch fades to gray. On flatter beds, shredded hardwood holds moisture better and lasts longer between refreshes than pine straw does. We edge the beds clean and lay fresh mulch to an even depth so it locks in moisture, insulates the soil, and slows weeds down, no chemicals.

Mulch does more than finish a bed. A fresh layer holds soil moisture through the heat, insulates roots from our temperature swings, and breaks down over time to feed the soil. We install black, brown bark, and hardwood mulch. We edge the beds, lay mulch to an even depth, and keep it clean off your walkways and drive.

Good questions

Mulch Installation questions, answered

How often does mulch need refreshing in Tallahassee?

Most beds do well with a fresh layer once a year, usually in spring. Mulch breaks down over time and feeds the soil as it goes, so you top it up rather than strip and replace. On flat, shaded beds a good layer can hold up well past a year.

How deep should mulch be laid?

We lay mulch two to three inches deep, enough to lock in moisture and slow weeds without smothering roots. We keep it pulled back from the base of your plants and off your walkways and drive.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. We provide free, fast estimates, often within 24 hours, so you know the scope and the price before any work starts.

Are you insured?

Yes, GR Lawn Care & Landscaping is insured. Every job is also backed by our promise that we do not leave until you are satisfied with the work.

What areas do you serve?

Tallahassee and surrounding communities within about 15 miles, including Killearn, Bradfordville, Southwood, Woodville, and Chaires. For larger landscaping and sod projects we travel farther, including Crawfordville and Havana.

How quickly can you respond?

We offer same-day response. Call us and we will get you scheduled quickly, and after a storm we respond fast for urgent limb and debris cleanup.

Do you apply weed control, fertilizer, or pest treatment?

No. We focus on the physical lawn and landscape work: mowing, landscaping, trimming, cleanups, sod, mulch, and pine straw. We do not apply herbicides, fertilizers, or pesticides.

What payment methods do you accept?

Cash, check, credit and debit cards, and Venmo, Zelle, or Cash App.

Do you back your work?

Yes. We do not leave a job until you are satisfied with the work.

What services do you offer?

Lawn maintenance and mowing, landscaping, hedge and shrub trimming, roof blow-off (debris removal), sod installation, mulch, pine straw, walkways and pathways, leaf removal, storm cleanup, and brush clearing.

Do you take on commercial properties?

Yes. We work with residential homeowners first, but we also take on commercial properties. Give us a call to talk about your property.
